For a few seconds, stop what you’re doing, close your eyes and take a few breaths. Just listen to your breath and feel your heart beating. This is meditation, and it can actually change your brain!

Meditation helps us to tune into our emotions and become more self-aware.  One way to think of meditation is that it gives you a chance to practice your actions or feelings in your head before you put them into the real world.  A lot of famous people use mediation to help them focus and be more productive. Katy Perry starts each day with meditation, and Jennifer Anniston says that her daily meditation helps to keep her calm and beautiful!

Here are a few ways to get started meditating—no matter how old you are.

Focus on your breathing

Sit in a comfortable place and feel your breathing. Breathe in while you count to five, and then out while you count to five. Feel your chest move up and down and how your heart rate changes. This practice helps you learn to focus and let your other thoughts go for a little while.

Go for a silent walk

Mediation helps us become more aware of the present moment. If sitting still is just too hard at first, try going for a silent walk. During the walk, pay attention to the things around you—the colors, the sounds and the smells. Stay in the moment, and try not to think about anything except what is right in front of you.

Try an app

The Smiling Mind app was designed especially for younger people, but adults can use it too. After you choose your age range, the app will guide you through different meditations. You can even keep track of your progress and set reminders to meditate.

Meditation can make you more relaxed, help you handle stress and concentrate better, and build energy. Many successful people meditate every day, and it is a great way to build the energy and focus we need to reach our dreams!
