Everyone likes spring. Some people like the flowers that bloom while others enjoy the warmer weather that spreads across the United States. For baseball fans, their favorite part of spring is Spring Training! Players that have been resting during the winter months pull back on their caps and cleats and hit the dirt in some of the warmer states, mainly Florida and Arizona, in Spring Training camps that are called the Grapefruit League and the Cactus League.

Spring Training is mainly a whole lot of practice, but the players and fans still have a great time at the games. Watching a Spring Training game is no different than watching a regular season baseball game for the fans. For the teams and players, these games don’t count on their win and loss record for the year, but lots of people try to pick which teams will be good by how they play during Spring Training.

One of the teams that a lot of fans are talking about is the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908! That’s almost 100 years. Legend says that it’s the “Curse of the Billy Goat” that has kept them from winning. In 1945, a man from Chicago named Billy Sianis showed up at a baseball game with his billy goat. He hoped to have it sit with him in the seats, and he even had tickets for it, he was thrown out of the stadium. As they ejected him, he yelled, “The Cubs, they ain’t gonna win no more.” However, this year during Spring Training, the last place Cubs team is still full of young players that say “They Believe.”

Another promising team to watch during Spring Training is the Kansas City Royals, who have six wins and no losses in the Grapefruit League. The New York Yankees currently lead the Cactus league. No matter which team you are rooting for, Spring Training is definitely a sign that something great is on the way: Summer!
