Do you ever think about running your own business? Maybe you made enough money mowing lawns last summer to buy that awesome backpack you wanted for school. Well, if you’ve ever dreamed of being an entrepreneur, Mark Cuban has a thing or two to teach you.
When Mark was twelve years old, he really wanted a pair of expensive basketball shoes. His mother told him that he had to pay for them himself, so Mark came up with an idea. He started selling sets of garbage bags! Who would have thought? But people needed them, and Mark needed those shoes. And he got them!
Mark’s family did not have the money to pay for him to go to college, so he came up with many different business ideas to pay for it himself. His most productive one was giving dance lessons. But even after graduating and starting his own consulting business, Mark’s thoughts kept going back to that first pair of shoes. He loved one thing almost as much as business: Basketball.
In 1995, Mark wanted to be able to listen to Indiana Hoosier basketball games. So he went into business with some partners and created an internet program that would broadcast the games! He got exactly what he wanted, but listening to the games still wasn’t enough. Mark wanted more! So, he sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo! for almost six billion dollars.
After years of working towards his dream, Mark Cuban bought a basketball team. The Dallas Mavericks needed some practice, but Mark knew he could make them a championship team. He started coming up with different kinds of ideas to make basketball fun for all sorts of people. He wrote a blog and made posts on social media. He started to select players with great personalities, and then he built a new stadium.
By 2015, the Mavs have become a household name and Mark Cuban is making his dreams come true, along with many of the players on the team. They are in the NBA playoffs this year! What kind of entrepreneur do you think that you might be?
